Flus that spread very fast and flus that are deadly
c) Why is the Spanish flu called this way?
It's called the Spanish flu because the Spanish press was the freest, they were the first to talk openly about it.
d) Why would any epidemic nowadays spread quicker than in the 20th century?
Because of modern transport
e) How big of an investment in preparing for an epidemic can make a difference?
Less than $1 billion a year

When is St Patrick’s Day?

Why is this day celebrated as St Patrick’s Day?
Because St Patrick brought Christianity into Ireland.
Where is it celebrated?
It is celebrated all around the world, even though it is a national Irish holiday.
When was St Patrick born?
He was born in the IV century.
What happened to St Patrick at the age of 16?
He was kidnapped and sold as a slave by Irish marauders. He then turned to God.
What did the saint see as his ‘calling’?
His “calling” was to try and convert all the pagans in Ireland into Christianity.
What is a shamrock?
A shamrock is a three-leaved clover found growing in patches on grass.
What use did St Patrick make of the shamrock?
He used it to explain the Holy Trinity (the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit) to his followers.
What is a leprechaun?
Leprechauns are little Irish fairies who are thought to work as shoe-makers for other fairies.
What should you do if you meet a leprechaun?
You should catch him and demand him to show you where his pot of gold is hidden.
Where is the Blarney Stone and what is special about it?
The Blarney Stone can be found on the top story of the Blarney Castle. It is said that if one kisses the stone, they will be given the gift of eloquence.
What does the word ‘blarney’ mean today?
It means the ability to influence and convince words and speech without offending.

People usually have corned beef and cabbage. They also eat soda bread and potato pancakes.

They put green food colouring into their beers and traditional Irish Guinness Stout is sold in huge amounts in all Irish pubs.
What ingredients does Irish Coffee have?
Irish Coffee is made with warm whiskey, sugar, coffee and topped off with whipped cream.
How long was St Patrick a missionary in Ireland?
He was a missionary for 30 years.
What is Guinness Stout?
It is a typical Irish stout (similar to beer). It is dark, extremely bitter and also one of the mosts successful beer brands worldwide.
